“The High 5” March 14th Edition

I was on vacation last week, but were back this week and have some High 5’s to give out!  So here we go!!

Evan Davis (stocking cap on) & Philip Davis come out after the polar plunge!

Evan Davis (stocking cap on) & Philip Davis come out after the polar plunge!

Our good buddy Evan Davis gets a Hot High 5 to try to warm him up after taking a Polar Plunge on March 1 at Holmes Lake in Lincoln.  As if the water wasn’t cold it enough, if I recall on that day the temperature was in the single digits.  Evan and his brother Philip did this together and along with proving to everyone they were crazy enough to do this stunt, they also raised over $1000 for Special Olympics! A crazy thing to do, but a great thing to do to help raise funds for Special Olympics!  High 5 Evan….and we better give Philip one too!!

Scott Poese and Sasquatch aka Kyler Dean at Terry Peak!!

Scott Poese and Sasquatch aka Kyler Dean at Terry Peak!!

Our next High 5 goes out to Sasquatch!!  Well he looked like Sasquatch!!  We’re talking about our little friend Kyler Dean.  Last weekend around 120 O’Neill kids and adults headed to Terry Peak for Spring Break Skiing!  Along with all the spills and thrills on High 5 Friday a furry creature appeared on the slopes and brought laughs and smiles to all that saw him in a brown blur headed down the hill on his skis!  Of course we had to get a High 5 from our furry friend!! It’s the little things that make a trip memorable and fun and Kyler definitely did that!!  High 5 Kyler!!

payitforward2014Here’s a High 5 to our favorite cool guy….George Holm from Dairy Queen in O’Neill.  George is always doing great things in our area for organizations, churches, teams and individuals.  Well this time George wants to finish up the campaign to raise the funds to build the Northeast Community College Extended Campus in O’Neill.  And were just about there!!  But we need about $150,000 to finish it off!  This week George delivered over 60 ice cream buckets, not full of ice cream, but hoping to get filled with donations to get us to the goal.  George calls it “Pay It Forward Today, For a Brighter Future Tomorrow” and he couldn’t be more correct.  This facility will help keep residents young and old alike in our area where they will be able to get a college education along with all the other fun and informational courses that they offer today.  So next week when you are visiting our local businesses and see an ice cream bucket with the picture of the new facility on it, please donate.  Whether it’s $5, $100, $10,000 or just your pocket change, every little bit will count and we hope to hit the $150,000 left by the end of the month!  And when you see our ole buddy George, give him a High 5!  Hit the goal and I’ll bet he’ll give you a High 10!!!  High 5 George!!

And we’ll give out 6 High 5’s to the O’Neill High School Quiz Bowl Team.  Members are Maranda Winter, Kristy Tompkins, Myles Stagemeyer, Jon Hunt, Collin Nemec and Shea Lueninghoener.  This team competed in the ESU 8 Quiz bowl on March 12.  Now there were 21 teams that competed and the O’Neill High School team came away with the 1st place trophy.  They also qualified for the State Competition in Holdredge.  Well if you’ve ever been to a quiz bowl, you know the teams take it seriously and the questions are tough.  I have enough trouble watching the Price Is Right, so you know these kids really study hard to compete at this level!  High 5 OHS Quiz Bowl Team and Good Luck at State!!

That’s it for this week’s edition of “The High 5”!  Now I’m counting on all of you to go out there today, enjoy the spring like weather and give at least 5 High 5’s today!!

High 5!!

Scott

P.S.  Along with knowing I would not be a good quiz bowl team member, I also commit a few typos in this blog.  So until my sister Cindy Morales reads this and e-mails me back my errors, I apologize for any blunders!!

Last High 5 for February!!

Last day of the month of February and it’s Friday!! Hopefully you’ve passed out the High 5’s today!!

Tim Lechtenberg with the O'Neill Eagle State Runner-Up trophy.

Tim Lechtenberg with the O’Neill Eagle State Runner-Up trophy.

In this edition of “The High 5” we give our first High 5 out to a young man who has gained some attention across our state and that is O’Neill Eagle Wrestler Tim Lechtenberg!  And Tim is getting his second High 5 in this blog. This time though we give him the High 5 for his effort to raise money in the battle against pediatric brain cancer.  Earlier this year Tim came up with the idea to raise money to help a young O’Neill boy, Aidan Spangler, who has been battling brain cancer.  “Pins For Aidan” is what Tim came up with and went around town and asked for pledges for each pin that an O’Neill Eagle Wrestler makes during the season.  So far over $2200 has been raised and this weekend will be the final matches of the year so hopefully even more will be raised!  High 5 Tim!!  You can listen to an interview Tim did with us on KBRX by clicking on this link http://www.radiop1.com/kbrx/?programid=641176&autoplay=y

Our next High 5’s go to O’Neill Wrestlers also!!  Joseph Gillham, Blake Walters and David Fox!  These three wrestlers went the distance during the 3-days of the State Wrestling Tournament and came out with the Gold Medals around their neck!  If you were there, or listened to reports, this tournament is the best of the best and to come away with no losses during the 3 days is no easy feat.  High 5 Joseph, Blake & David!!! You guys deserve it!!

Our final High 5 today goes out to all the kids from schools in North Central Nebraska that participated in the Sing Around Nebraska event last Saturday at Wheeler Central School in Bartlett.  Over 100 kids got up early Saturday morning to load a bus and then spent the day practicing for their concert which was presented that afternoon.  The performance was exceptional and the musical selection was very entertaining.  High 5 kids for a job well done!

The High 5 For February 21

Well I have no excuse other than thinking that getting home late a few nights from basketball meant I didn’t have time to give out some High 5’s!  So I applied a few High 5’s to each side of my skull and will apologize that I sluffed off.  So today let’s get a crack-a-lackin’ and get our hands in the air for High 5 Friday!

The Glow Stick Outlined West Holt Dance Team

The Glow Stick Outlined West Holt Dance Team

I’m only about a week behind in giving the West Holt High School Dance Team a High 5 for a light’s out halftime performance last week!  Literally a lights out performance, as the lights were shut out in the gym and in a flash, glow stick outlined performers put on a one-of-a-kind show.  It was pitch dark and the performers pulled it off without a hitch.  High 5 Girls and great job!!

It’s National FFA Week and the chapters in our area have been busy!  Of course one week of daily activities is nothing for these kids.  Along with sports, music, speech, and their many projects in FFA they do have to find time for school studies and most excel at that too.  All I can say is that these kids are amazing and if you see them at any of these events pat them on the back and encourage them to keep it up!  Here are some High 5’s from some of the FFA Chapters and also some of their events this week!  High 5 FFA!!!

Our final High 5 this week is quite fitting.  The KBRX area is well represented this weekend at the State Wrestling Championships in Omaha.  Not only the athletes, but the coaches, student bodies and families that could not even begin to add up the time and effort put forth to make it to the Century Link Center and a quest for gold.  And is it me or have you noticed that when they determine a victor of a match, when the official holds their hand up does it appear to be similar looking to the form for a High 5??? I think so!!  So here are the State Wrestling Qualifiers from the KBRX area!  High 5 on a great season!!

statewrestling2014

And in closing, we give out High 5’s here on “The High 5” in hopes that maybe you will notice someone that needs a High 5!  Human contact in the form of a slap of the hand high in the air can go a long way!  It’s the little things that most often mean the most .  Whether it’s a High 5, a hello or as Hyatt Hotels prove in this video, even something as simple as opening a door for someone can make a difference, just watch

Simple isn’t it….and so is a High 5!!  So today give a High 5 to 5 different people that you don’t know!!  Watch and see what they do and how they react!!!

Last High 5 Friday For January!!

It’s the last day of the month and the last Friday of the month. And I’m about a week behind here on “The High 5”. So before January is gone let’s get our hands in the air and give them out today!

Gary Hostert (left) receives award from O'Neill Rotary President Cody Boettcher

Gary Hostert (left) receives award from O’Neill Rotary President Cody Boettcher

Last week the O’Neill Rotary Club had an evening dinner to thank all the volunteers that help each year to make the St. Patrick’s Day Fun Run such a success. The event takes place the Saturday morning before the big St. Patrick’s Day parade, but the planning takes months of preparation. One of those volunteers received a special honor and that was Gary Hostert. Gary has put in 26 years of service to the Fun Run and the honor from the Rotary was well deserved. But this Fun Run is one of many activities that Gary helps out with. Any student that has had Mr. Hostert for a teacher will tell you there is none other that is as passionate about learning history and making it fun as Gary. Gary also helps out with other fun runs in town, is active in his church, helps with the Alumni Basketball Tournament, makes an extra effort to make sure that kids are learning, does play by play on KBRX, and we could go on and on. But Gary would not want any extra credit for any of this, he does all of these with the goal to see others succeed. And no matter what your age, we all can learn from what he does out of the kindness of his heart! For this Gary, we give you a big High 5!!

hcypA High 5 to our Holt County Young Professionals and their Social Media day today wanting to know what you love about Holt County. If every day you posted one good thing about living where we do on your Facebook or Twitter page or posted one good thing that happened to you today, I can assure you it would not only make you feel better but you’d be surprised how many you would touch. High 5 to the Holt County Young Professionals and thanks for making Holt County a better place!!

Tom Chvala & Coach Miles celebrate a big win!

Tom Chvala & Coach Miles celebrate a big win!

Our final High 5 today goes out Nebraska Basketball Coach Tim Miles. This past couple of weeks there have been Holt County ties to a couple of things that Coach Miles went out of his way to do. And his example is one we all can follow today, on High 5 Friday. A couple of weeks ago when Nebraska beat 17th ranked Ohio State, after the game Coach Miles gave O’Neill’s own Tom Chvala a celebratory hug which resulted in a photo opportunity that went viral on the internet and was replayed many times on different TV networks. Then this week Coach Miles records a personal video that results in one of our former residents, Theresa Conradt, saying yes to her now fiancé. You can see more on that video by clicking here http://www.omaha.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=%2F20140130%2FLIVING%2F140139898 What does this have to do with High 5 Friday? It goes back to our repetitive request each week to do something that takes very little time, but could result in making a

Newly engaged Theresa Conradt & Joe Haack thanks to Coach Miles

difference in someone’s day. Coach Miles didn’t have to do any of those little things that turned huge for just 3 people and also made thousands feel good. One person getting a High 5 from you, then giving another person a High 5 can go on and on. Or one person visiting our town, seeing a crazy person at the convenience store giving everyone in there a High 5 could start giving High 5’s in their hometown. And that’s our goal….to take High 5 Friday and make it happen every Friday worldwide! Make a difference…you can give 5 High 5’s in a total time of 5 seconds, and there’s a lot of seconds every Friday!!

Our first High 5 goes out to O’Neill Eagle Wrestler Tim Lechtenberg. Congratulations to Tim on being awarded both the Individual Sportsmanship award and the Never Give Up award at the Mid Dakota Monster wrestling tournament in Presho SD. Anyone who has seen Tim wrestle knows he was deserving of both. We are proud of you Tim and here’s a big High 5 to you!!!

Star Spangled Gymnastics Team performing at O'Neill High School Wrestling Meet.

Our next High 5 goes out to Melanie Peetz and her Star Spangled Gymnastics Squad.  If you’ve never been to a basketball or wrestling meet or to the Husker Hoops during St. Patrick’s Day to see these kids of all ages do some amazing gymnastics, then you need to make sure the next time they perform to get there.  Now they usually perform in O’Neill, however last night they hauled their mats and made a road trip to Ainsworth to perform during the O’Neill/Ainsworth basketball games.  Some of the gymnasts are from Ainsworth and they wanted to bring their show on the road for others to see.  Here was a comment on Facebook today after watching them perform last night: “Wow the most entertaining and energetic two or three minutes I have spent in a long time.”  High 5 to all the kids, parents and Melanie and her helpers for all their hard work!  High 5!!

Front and Back of Art Holz's Tree Stump Turned Art Piece & Feeder

Front and Back of Art Holz’s Tree Stump Turned Art Piece & Feeder

My final High 5 goes out to my ole buddy, Art Holz.  I’m not for sure who Art hired to do this, but Art turned an ugly ole tree stump in a great piece of art and charity for the squirrels. The “H” which you see from the road is cool, but the back of the stump with the ears of corn for the squirrels that are protected from snow and rain is even more cool!  Here’s a big High 5 to Art…and his chainsaw artist!

This week’s edition is short and sweet but none-the-less those above are deserving of a High 5!

Make sure this week to give a High 5 to someone you don’t know!!  You can do it!!

“The High 5” First Post For 2014

2014 Avera St. Anthony’s Baby New Year and Mom. Nicole Hiatt and son Kayden.

So here we go and we welcome in 2014 with a High 5 to our first baby of the New Year Kayden Anthony Hiatt! Kayden was born to Nicole Hiatt on January 3rd at 5:30 pm and weighed in at 8 lbs 1 oz. High 5 Kayden and mom Nicole, what a great way to start the year!!

Our next High 5 is a paw in the air and a High 5 to the O’Neill Casey’s General Store and their customers for coming through in a big way for the Holt County Animal Shelter. They had a goal to raise $1000 which willcaseysdoghigh52014 pay for a new kennel and went above their goal and raised $1200. Not only did they raise the money but they also collected over 40 items from dog treats, toys and food that went to our four legged friends that are searching for a new home. If you haven’t been to the Holt County Animal Shelter it is a busy place and has been successful in finding homes for dozens of dogs this past year. Check out their website at http://www.holtcountyanimalshelter.com High 5 Casey’s and your Customers for this awesome donation!!

Makayla Hilker (left) and MaKenzie Parks volunteered to deliver Meals On Wheels

Makayla Hilker (left) and MaKenzie Parks volunteered to deliver Meals On Wheels

Another High 5 goes out to all the volunteers that deliver Meals on Wheels every week. Our local Senior Centers do a great job and put out a great meal 5 days a week, and if you haven’t enjoyed a meal at your local senior center do so this week. But not everyone is able to get out and come to the local centers for the meal and rely on volunteers to come and pick up the meals and get them delivered. Today I had the honor of helping along with two young ladies from O’Neill Elementary School. Next week the O’Neill Public High School will be delivering. And from individuals to churches to youth groups all year long every week there is someone that is volunteering. Thanks to you that volunteer and to those that will in the future. High 5!!

We gave out some High 5’s last month to those that helped and also donated to the Toys For Tots but today I thought I would give a High 5 to the individual who sent a thank you note to KBRX to the Men’s Club and to those that donated to make a child’s Christmas better. After you read the note here it pretty much sums it up.toysfortotsletter2014

It’s a new year and that means you can make it a great one. And that is why we celebrate High 5 Friday. It’s a chance once a week to greet someone that you might not know or someone that you’ve know all your life. It’s a chance to bring a smile to someone’s face or to wake up a room when you walk in and announce that “It’s High 5 Friday” and pass out High 5’s to all. It’s a simple gesture, yet you never know when it will be that one moment that turns someones bad day into a good day. Aaron Davis, who has talked in our area quite a bit had a quote on his Twitter feed today and it sums up why we celebrate High 5 Friday. Learn more about Aaron at http://www.aarondavisspeaks.com/ Here’s the quote…and High 5!!

And my first High 5 would have to go out to my family!  Darcy, Brandon and Michael are truly a blessing in my life and I High 5 them for putting up with my crazy schedule!  I know that I don’t tell them enough how much I appreciate them for always being there to support me!  My resolution for 2014 is to show them how much I do appreciate having them in my life and how much they mean to me!!!  High 5 Poese Gang!!!

high5handHow about a big High 5 to the O’Neill Men’s Club.  Now I’ve brought up Toys For Tots in this blog already, but this time would like to give a High 5 to the members of the Men’s Club.  Making sure that over 130 kids get the correct presents delivered for Christmas is a task that, when you see all the packages spread out, is overwhelming.  Along with that the Fireworks for the 4th of July, Easter Egg Hunt and other events they help out with is greatly appreciated!  High 5 to the O’Neill Men’s Club!

Another High 5 to all that helped and contributed with the Mobile Food Pantry, Christmas Closet and Soup Supper that was held Thursday night at the O’Neill Community Center.  People peoplehelpingpeoplehelping people is demonstrated there probably more than anywhere else as hundreds of people and households get that extra help with food, clothing, toys, gifts and more.  You’re efforts really go a long way!  High 5!

And our next two High 5’s go to a couple of individuals who make us smile during Christmas.

“The High 5” 12th Edition

And here is the 12th Edition of “The High 5”!  Hard to believe that 2013 is nearing the end but we still have a  lot to celebrate before the year is over.

So our first High 5 goes out to Mrs. Julie Pistulka’s 3rd Grade Reading Class at O’Neill Public School.   This class put together a 15 minute video on “O’Neill Then  Now.”  Myself being born in O’Neill am always interested in the history of our great town and these kids really did a great job getting research, pictures and even interviewing some of our local residents.  Even my Dad, Gil Poese, made a cameo appearance.  Getting to learn about your hometown has progressed and then sharing it with us is very worth of a High 5!  Here’s the link to the video and I would highly recommend you taking 15 minutes to view it!  Great job kids and High 5!!

Here’s a High 5 to the Chambers FCCLA for holding a “Light It Up Blue” event at a recent basketball game to raise awareness of children affected by autism. One in 88 children are diagnosed with autism. Chambers FCCLA thought they should do something chambersfcclalightitupblue2013about this statistic.  So they encouraged students and fans to buy a blue t-shirt and wear it to the game.  The FCCLA chapter’s main focus was to advocate for autism and get information about it to some of the local community members and students. All proceeds from the cookies and shirts went to Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks is an autism advocacy foundation, where funds go to autism research and helping others learn what autism is.  It’s events like this that make people aware of a developmental disorder that children in our area are affected by.  Thanks for doing this Chambers FCCLA and High 5!

cattlemensballlogoOur next High 5 goes out to an event that has notified us that they would like to have it in our area.  And that event is the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Ball.  Our area has been asked to host this amazing event on June 5 & 6, 2015.  The Tom Herzog and Kim Schweers’ Ranch, near Redbird, 4 ½ miles south of Lynch is the site that has been chosen.  Myself along with Stephanie Boettcher of Spencer, Kelly Kalkowski of Lynch, Nicole Sedlacek, and Deb Hilker, both of O’Neill are co-chairs.  But the main thing that makes this event work is volunteers and we need hundreds of volunteers in order to make this work.  So we have planned information meeting in the next week.  On Sunday, December 15 at 3 pm we will have a meeting at the Lynch Community Center in Lynch and on Thursday, December 19 at 7 pm will have a meeting at the Holt County Economic Development Office in the Old Depot in south O’Neill.  Again this is an honor to host this even and we can’t stress enough that we need you to be a part of it.  Come to the meetings, but if you can’t contact any of the co-chairs and let them know you would like to volunteer.  The Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska, Inc was established in 1997. The annual event promotes beef in a healthy diet, showcases rural Nebraska, and raises money for healthcare research. The profits benefit the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and local healthcare. So here’s a High 5 in advance to all of you to be a part of this and let’s showcase the area where we live to Nebraskan’s all across the state!!

thermalserviceskbrx2013giveawayOur next High 5 goes to Thermal Services of O’Neill, Atkinson and Spencer for their annual giveaway of a Heating & Air Conditioning Unit including installation. They have done this in the past and for $10 you have a chance to win with the proceeds going to worthy causes.  And this year the proceeds go to the Northeast Community College capital campaign for the new extended campus to be built on the east edge of O’Neill.  We’ll be announcing the winner today, December 13 at 1:00 pm and while there will be only one winner of the furnace, we all will win with the new campus that will be built in O’Neill.  Thermal Services will donate the proceeds to the capital campaign.  Taking pride in our area and helping a great cause is what makes our area what it is.  And this is one example that get’s a High 5 today!  High 5 to the employees at Thermal Services for this awesome contribution!

Our final High 5 today goes out to a recent award winner from Monte James, host of the Territorial Rodeo Update that you can hear weekly on KBRX.  In all of Monte’s travels he annually gives out the “Best Of” in many different categories from Best Hotel tochesterfieldwest Best Chinese Food and this year for the first time “Best Burger” goes to Chesterfield West in downtown O’Neill and the famous “CW Burger.”  And as Monte says in his report, they were doing the Pretzel Bun before the Pretzel Bun was cool.   So if you haven’t tried this burger yet, now you can try an Award Winning Burger, the “CW Burger” at Chesterfield West!  Yum, Yum and High 5!!  CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO MONTE’S ANNOUNCEMENT Monte James of TRU With Chesterfield Announcement

My Dad and my Sisters all together for Thanksgiving.

“The High 5” is back. We took a Thanksgiving break and had a great opportunity to spend time with my Dad and all of my sisters and their spouses who came back to O’Neill for Thanksgiving.

So were going to pass out some High 5’s today and were going to start with the Stuart Broncos Football Team who finished Runner-Up in Class D2. Now, the part that makes this interesting is while they faced stuartbroncofootballd2runnerup2013opponents this year with 30-40 players on a team, the Stuart Bronco team consisted of 17 members. And if you do the math that means that these players play a lot of minutes each game. So all the extra time spent in the weight room, taking a jog around town and being healthy paid off. The old Mark Twain saying “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog” holds true with the Stuart Broncos. Congratulations and High 5!!

Now I’m a part of that team so I’m not going to High 5 myself but rather High 5 the guys that definitely put more miles on and time into the High School sports season than me. Mark Moser, Gary Hostert, Terry Tomjack and the other color commentators that bring you the exciting play by play do deserve a High 5! As someone that haskbrxsportsnews been doing this for over 30 years I can tell you that nothing makes a school year go by faster than by watching all the great kids we have in our schools compete each week. And while it is our job, that is just a cover up for fun. Along with the kids we watch compete, the cheerleaders, bands, school staff, parents, and fans make every night at a ball game a lot of fun. So next time you see the KBRX Sports guys at your school, give them a High 5! High 5 to the Sports Crew!!

We’ve got both hands in the air this time for a double High 5 and also some paws in the air to Ariel Lichty of the O’Neill FCCLA Chapter who put together a Penny War at O’Neill High School and raised $682 and also to the members of the “Up & At It” 4-H Club who raised $425. Both of these organizations showed up at the Holt County Animal Shelter on the day before Thanksgiving and presented them with checks. The dogs that are looking for new homes definitely appreciate a warm, dry place to be and also are well fed and entertained while they are waiting to meet their new family. And if you’re looking for a new addition to your family, make sure to check out the current roster of great dogs at the Holt County Animal Shelter. You’re all Top Dogs with us for these awesome donations! High 5!

And in the Holiday Spirit we are going to give a High 5 to all that help out with Toys For Tots. I am speaking for the Toys For Tots here in O’Neill but also know that other towns have drives going on to that toysfortotsneed your help. This year over 60 families in O’Neill will benefit from Toys For Tots. The amazing part of this is how quickly the community reacts to making sure that kids of these families will have a Merry Christmas. The generosity of individuals, families, organizations and businesses truly blows me away every year. And the reaction from these kids that get to open presents on Christmas is what it’s all about. Look for the Toys For Tots trees in some of our local businesses , take an envelope and have fun shopping for the kids on that envelope. Even making it a family shopping night for your family to shop for another family can be a lot of fun. High 5 to you and thanks for making it a Merry Christmas for these kids in our area.

It’s almost Christmas so make sure to shop at our local businesses this Holiday Season and also make sure to give out at least 5 High 5’s today….Santa Claus is watching you!!

High 5!!
